£3,200.00

Single Cask-Single Malt, 59%abv – Drawn from the first ever cask of peated whisky.

We produced our very first batch of Man O’ Sword; our peated spirit (45 ppm phenolics). Scottish Rugby icon, Doddie Weir, filled the first cask (2014/040) on Monday, December 1st, 2014. Later broached on 1st December 2017 by Doddie himself, 99 bottles were drawn from this historic cask and donated to the My Name’5 Doddie charity. Since then the Man O’ Sword bottlings baring his name have raised nearly £30,000 for his MND charity.

This bottling is the remainder of that very cask. The first cask of peated whisky ever distilled at Annandale Distillery in this era of whisky production, the first in 90 years.

Description

This release comes presented in a beautiful hand-made bespoke ash and metal display box made by Ian and Claire Cameron-Smith, the craftsmen behind all the wood work around the distillery. Along with a unique booklet, made from the same cuts of wood as the box. The booklet outlines Annandale’s history, the provenance of this botting and its tasting notes. All delivered in a stunning hand made velvet bag.

In 2014 Annandale produced 85 casks of peated Man O’ Sword. A small number of these casks were bottled at just over 3 years of age, capturing that never-to-be-repeated moment in time when the first of Annandale’s spirit transitioned into Single Malt Scotch Whisky……and superb it is too (see Jim Murray’s 2019 Whisky Bible)! You can become one of very few Scotch Whisky lovers to own a bottle of Annandale Distillery’s first peated Single Malt for 100 years.

TASTING NOTES

Soft smoke at first, a mixture of log fire, toasted biscuit and Darjeeling tea. This gives way to a mixed tropical fruit with nectarine, melon and mango. There’s underlying creaminess with vanilla, honey and a note of burnt orange with resinous wood.

FINISH

Long with sweet honey and vanilla. Peat smoke and leather return at the very end.

CONCLUSION

A well balanced, complex whisky. The peat flavours of smoke, tea and toast are well matched with mixed tropical fruit, cream and a long, honeyed finish.
